Prostate Assessment Clinic

The prostate is a small gland, which is found only in men. It is found at the base of the bladder and surrounds the water pipe (urethra) which carries urine from the bladder to the penis. Prostate assessment can help to find the cause of your symptoms.

A prostate assessment is necessary in the following instances:

  • Difficulty in passing urine
  • Frequency in passing urine day and night
  • Weak or interrupted flow of urine
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Blood in urine or semen

The following are necessary to make a diagnosis

  • Taking your medical history
  • PSA test
  • Digital rectal examination
  • Prostate biopsies if needed
  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

It is a substance made by the prostate gland, which naturally leaks out into the bloodstream. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in your blood. A raised PSA level can be caused by an infection in the prostate or an enlargement of the prostate that often comes with ageing. However, in some cases it can be an indication of prostate cancer.

  • Digital Rectal Examination (DRE):

The prostate is situated next to the back passage (rectum). Examination of the prostate can be performed by your doctor inserting a forefinger into your back passage and gently pressing against the lower wall of the rectum. In this way, any abnormality of the prostate can be felt.

  • Trans-rectal Ultrasound Guided Biopsy:

If a lump or hardening of your prostate has been found during the rectal examination, your doctor may want to take a sample of cells to examine under a microscope. One of the ways of doing this is by Trans-rectal Ultrasound Guided Biopsy. The procedure is usually done in an outpatient clinic theatre or hospital theatre. It lasts about 15 minutes.

The doctor uses the transducer and ultrasound images to guide a needle to the tumor. The needle is then used to remove a few pieces of prostate tissue for examination with a microscope. This process, called biopsy can reveal whether prostate cancer is present. You will hear a clicking sound each time a biopsy is taken. The procedure is done with light sedation and local anesthesia and it is a day case procedure (which means you can go home a few hours after it is done).

Please note: if you are taking any medicines which thin the blood, such as aspirin or warfarin, it is important that you let us know in advance as it may be necessary to stop them.

Our findings from your examination and tests performed will be discussed with you and further recommendations made.
