Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and black men are in the highest risk group and represent approximately 270 cases per 100,000 men.

Symptoms:
Most men have none but symptoms that may suggest that you have prostate cancer include:

  • Weak or interrupted flow of urine
  • Frequent urination (especially at night)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Pain in the back, hips or pelvis that does not go away
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Weight loss

The following are necessary to make a diagnosis:

  • A medical history
  • Digital rectal examination (DRE).This is when a gloved finger is inserted into the rectum to feel the prostate.
  • An ultrasound scan of the prostate is done to determine its size, weight and look for any suspicious areas and growths.
  • A blood test called the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is performed. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate that increases as the prostate enlarges. Its values tend to be elevated in patients with prostate cancer, so it is used as a screening test in conjunction with the DRE.
  • To make a diagnosis of prostate cancer, a tissue sample must be taken from the prostate. One of the ways of doing this is by Trans-rectal Ultrasound Guided Biopsy. A thin needle is inserted through the rectum while ultrasound images guide the needle to the tumor. The needle is then used to remove a few pieces of prostate tissue for examination with a microscope.

To prepare for the biopsy we would ask you to do the following:

  • Stop taking medication that can increase the risk of bleeding
  • Do a cleansing enema at home before your biopsy appointment
  • Take antibiotics 30 to 60 minutes before your prostate biopsy, to help prevent infection

Our findings from your examination and tests performed will be discussed with you and further recommendations made.
