TRANSRECTAL ULTRASOUND GUIDED PROSTATIC BIOPSY

Prostate Biopsy
A prostate biopsy is a procedure in which several samples of tissue are taken from the prostate. The samples can then be examined under the microscope to assess whether cancerous cells are present.

Why is a prostate biopsy done?

  • When a blood test shows a high level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
  • After a digital rectal examination finds an abnormal prostate or a lump.
  • If you've had a previous biopsy that was normal, but you still have elevated PSA levels
  • If a previous biopsy revealed prostate tissue cells that were abnormal but not cancerous

How do you prepare for the biopsy?
We may have you:

  • Stop taking medication that can increase the risk of bleeding
  • Do a cleansing enema at home before your biopsy appointment
  • Take antibiotics 30 to 60 minutes before your prostate biopsy, to help prevent infection

How is it done?

  • The procedure is usually done in an outpatient clinic theatre or hospital theatre. It lasts about 15 minutes but your appointment may last 2-3 hours.
  • You will be asked to lie on your side, with your knees drawn together towards your chin and given a local anaesthetic to reduce discomfort.
  • The doctor inserts a transducer slightly larger than a pen into the rectum next to the prostate. The ultrasound image shows the size of the prostate and any abnormal-looking areas, such as tumors. Once an image of abnormal cells is identified, pictures can be taken.
  • The doctor uses the transducer and ultrasound images to guide a needle to the tumor. A very fine needle is inserted inside the probe and is used to remove a few pieces of prostate tissue for examination with a microscope.
  • You will hear a clicking sound and feel a slight jolt each time a tissue sample is taken but the procedure is usually uncomfortable rather than painful.

After the biopsy
After the test, you will be given antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection and will return home. It is important that you drink a lot of water to flush out the small amount of blood from the prostate and guard against infection.

The results of a prostate biopsy are available within 7 to 10 days. The results will be discussed with you and further recommendations made.
